School Hours:
School hours are 8:00 to 3:00. Parents and student cooperation is requested in observing the daily school schedule. The building opens at 7:30 a.m. School begins at 8:00 a.m. Students who are not in their classroom by this time will be counted tardy. The school day ends at 3:00 p.m. All students should be picked by 3:30. Supervision is not provided before 7:30 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. If you are unable to pick up your child in the car line, please line up along the north wall in the cafeteria. For safety reasons, school personnel will dismiss your child to you.
Student Attendance:
The Springdale School District supports the philosophy that the instructional program is the vital part of a formal education. We further believe that it is necessary to require that students attend school a maximum number of days for instructional purposes during each school year. Parents are strongly discouraged from taking students out of school for any reason other than family emergencies.
Students are expected to be in school except in cases of emergency, illness, or school approved absences. Parents should call the school by 8:30 a.m. on the 1st day a student misses. If your child cannot go out for recess he/she must bring a signed note stating the reason for being excused. Frequent or extended absences from recess or P.E. may require a doctor's statement. Make-up work is required when applicable. Sufficient notice should be given the teacher when make-up work is required.
Absences:
An excused absence is one in which the student was absent with the parent's permission and knowledge for the following types of reasons: illness, school activities, court appearance, funeral, etc.
An unexcused absence will be considered as truancies and will be dealt with according to the district's truancy policy. Accumulating an excessive number of absences will be a basis for denial of promotion.
The student's parents, guardians, or persons in loco parentis shall be notified as required by law and as necessary when the student has accumulated seven, fourteen, and fifteen absences per semester. Notice shall be by telephone contact with the student's parents, guardians, or persons in loco parentis by the end of the school day in which absences occurred or by mail with a return receipt sent no later than the following school day.
Tardiness:
A student is tardy after 8:00 a.m. Student instruction begins at this time. A student should report to the office when arriving late.
Discipline:
One of the most important lessons education should teach is discipline. It is the shared responsibility of the home and school to accomplish this goal. It is the training that develops self-control, character, orderliness, and efficiency. Discipline is the key to good conduct and proper consideration for other people. Good discipline is maintained by recognizing and praising good behavior and taking corrective action when necessary. Students are expected to put forth their best effort and to conduct themselves at all times in a manner that will promote a safe, orderly learning environment. School and classroom rules and expected behavior are explained to the children. Any behavior or inappropriate language which causes the learning atmosphere to deteriorate or be disrupted or which infringes upon the rights of others in the school will not be tolerated and may subject the student to corrective measures.
Check-Out Procedures:
Students are expected to be at school until 3:00 p.m. If a student leaves during the school day, parents must check him/her out in the office. The child will then be summoned to the office via the intercom. Please do not go directly to the classroom. Parents are encouraged to make dental and medical appointments after school hours. Extracurricular lessons, i.e. piano, tennis, must be scheduled for after school hours.
Student Appearance:
Students are encouraged to dress in a neat and attractive manner that reflects pride in themselves and their school. We rely on parents' good judgment as to what students should wear. Generally, students should wear clothes which are safe, do not disturb or distract other students, and are appropriate for learning. Students who practice good personal hygiene and cleanliness feel better about themselves and consequently achieve better in school. Proper shoes (tennis shoes) should be worn for P.E. Shoes should not be worn that have cleats or taps on them. Also, no hats are allowed to be worn in the building.
School Visitation:
Parents are encouraged to visit school frequently and actively participate in the education of their child. We request that parents avoid conferences with the teacher during such visits, but rather schedule a conference for a mutually acceptable time. For the protection of the students, all non-students are to report to the office upon entering the building. Please do not go directly to the classroom. If you need to give your child a message, medication, homework, lunch money, supplies, etc. please go to the office. Interrupting class hampers valuable instruction time. Also, standing in the hall while waiting on your child or the teacher may be disruptive to the learning environment. Students from other schools are not permitted to visit class with your child.
Student Progress:
Please read any notes and newsletters which may come home with your child. In an effort to keep parents informed about student progress, the following measures are used:
*Pupil's sharing of papers and experiences are encouraged
*Intermittent notes, phone calls, and conferences are frequent
*Mid-quarter progress reports are sent home with students to indicate unsatisfactory progress
*A report card is issued each quarter which should be signed and returned
*Parent-teacher conferences are held after the first and third quarters
Student Placement/Teacher Request:
When placing students in classrooms, the Walker staff works many hours evaluating numerous criteria to create balanced environments, conducive to maximum learning for all. If special circumstances exist that a guardian feels should be shared, this can be done through a conference with an administrator &/or a letter to the principal. Information in regard to any special needs that your child may have are gladly accepted and appreciated. Any written request received will be evaluated and a response made to the author. We appreciate your understanding in this matter and trust in our judgment.
Medication:
Due to the significant number of children using medication and the broad range of medicines prescribed, it is becoming ever more likely than an incorrect dosage may occur at school. For this reason, parents and physicians are urged to schedule the administration of all medicine at home. However, when home consumption is not possible, medication will be administered at school under the following circumstances:
*The parent or guardian will fill out a medication permit that is available in the school
*All medication will be kept in a locked cabinet under supervision of the principal or designee.
*All medication must be in the original container with the child's name, doctor's name, date of
prescription, name of drug and directions for administration.
*If there is a need for medication (prescription or nonprescription) on a long range basis that is
more than two weeks, a doctor's statement is required stating the necessity for giving the
medication during the school day and any reaction that might occur.
School Meals:
The cafeteria is operated for the benefit of the students with a breakfast and lunch program available including a mainline and a food bar. Students have a lunch account and are encouraged to pay on a weekly or monthly basis. Lunches may be charged in an emergency, but for no longer than five days. There are no charges allowed for breakfast. Canned or bottled drinks are not permitted. Milk is available for students bringing their lunch from home. Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their children. Please notify the school in advance. In support of our school lunch program, home prepared sack lunches and school prepared lunches are desired. Please do not bring food from outside restaurants.
General Policies:
For the safety of all students, the following are not permitted at school:
*Use or possession of tobacco, alcohol and drugs
*Chewing gum
*Fighting
*Guns (real or toys), B.B. shot or other ammunition
*Firecrackers, matches, cigarette lighters
